A good day to gold-star Stuff

I haven’t blogged despite practicing – except for yesterday: yesterday I neither blogged nor practiced… lol. (I’ve been on a date yesterday, hooray!)

Today was a good day for me and the White Lady. I’ve managed to gold-star stuff that I’ve gotten myself hung up over for days now: the entire Knowledge Path is now clad in gold, I managed that bitch of part 3 of “12 Steps” in the “Keys and Grooves” mission that gave me so much grief last week, and which I didn’t think I’d manage anytime soon. Feels good. ūüôā Part 2 of “Triplets”, which wasn’t really hard but managed to screw with me regardless, is now golden, too. Rhythm Path’s “Broken Chords” Part 5 of “Playing in the Part” took me like 30 times, but eventually – I got through without a mistake. Frustrating stuff! What’s even more frustrating? This mission’s “Livewire” – not because it’s too hard, but because Yousician doesn’t recognize chords nearly as neatly as it does¬†melodies and arpeggios. I can’t get through this – because when Yousician recognizes one G, it proceeds to randomly not hear the one I play right thereafter, despite me not changing anything about either my fretting, nor my strumming. Drives me up the walls.

The “Strumming Challenge” mission, therefore, is just as hard to gold-star. None of the songs are hard… but I can’t get any of them right, because of that recognition issue. Try as I might: “El Condor Pasa”, “Funky Tractor”, “Bard’s Rock”, “Rest Now, Human”. Impossible. Going to try these on the acoustic tomorrow, maybe I’ll have better luck with that one on getting these chords to register. What I managed to gold-star from this misson today though is “Stardomite” and “La Bamba”, phew.

Also played 3 of the 4 new challenges for the week: “Luthier Sam” – Basic Melody Level 2, “Funky Madman” – Basic Chords Level 4, and “Luthier Sam” – Full Melody Level 6. That one is actually a lot of fun to play – will probably get back to it tomorrow to do it better than today.

All in all, I played well over 2 hours today. It helps to keep my mind off of… stuff. I am so glad I decided to get back into this.

So many things today!

Well, hey-hey! It’s been a good day to play some music, I can tell you that.

a) I got a cool weekly email, detailing my accomplishments of last week. For instants: I played for¬†352 minutes¬†and earned 46 gold stars –¬†93 stars in total – and finished¬†7 tasks. Cool beans.

b) I didn’t want to practice at all tonight, but then I couldn’t resist the call of the White Lady, and succumbed to her. And it was good – because…

…like it was nothing.¬†Seriously. 4 days after starting this. Not too shabby, eh… in fact, in hindsight this wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be based on the big deal that was made around this song in the FB group. A challenge, don’t get me wrong… but my expectations based on what I read raised this up on a level that in the end it really wasn’t on. Either way – on to further challenges…

c) …the weekly challenges, for one. “Cafe Olvido” (Lead Level 2) & “Yellowstone” (Rhythm Level 4) – as¬†well as some dappling in the Lead Level 6 challenge without any results.

d)¬†I gold starred some more stuff, too: Rhythm Path Level 5, Mission: Broken Chords: “Hammer Song”; Mission: Strumming Challenge: “Dame Mas Reggae”, “Stardomite”, “Robot Walk”. Yay!

e) I reached Level 6!!! Woo-hoo!!!

(Unfortunately I took the screenshot a few minutes after midnight, so my stars reset – but I was told I tripled my daily goal today.)

I AM going to Scarborough Fair, after all!

Aaaah! I didn’t reach my daily goal today, but I did manage to gold star 2 out of 3 parts of Scarborough Fair.

I use Yousician on my phone, so part 1 was gold-starred while one of my best friends suddenly called me… and my phone rang all throughout me playing. And that didn’t throw me off… I guess I focused so hard on the song to not get distracted by Star Wars’ “Binary Sunset” (- which is my ringtone), that I managed¬†it without a single mistake. Ha! I called my friend back… and returned to Yousician right afterwards, only to fly through part 2 like it was nothing. Insta-gold-star!

I was on a roll, convinced I’d do the same with part 3… alas…

…no.

Thwarted again!!! Ugh.

Slides and Stuff

Started on the Slides mission today, after trying to gold-star stuff that I hadn’t managed to gold-star before. Needless to say: Scarborough Fair wasn’t one of the things I managed.

Currently unmanaged, other than Scarborough Fair:

Morning Mood: 9 out of 12 gold stars – all because 2 empty(!) strings don’t register… ever.¬†Not on the electric… not on the acoustic… not with the iRig plugged in… not without the iRig… not on the phone… not on the PC… not EVER. So frustrating! Because I do play them. And I have the video to prove it.

Mentatonic – Melody: 6 out of 12 gold stars – what I don’t manage is the very last part… and the best I can do at the moment is “almost perfect” – with one single mistake.

Scale: Minor: Don’t even get me started – wtf??? What is so hard about this??? Nothing, that’s what.

30 Years Later: Fun to play! Keep on messing it up somewhere. Will get there.

What I gold-starred today: Dark Eyes – yay! What a fun song to play, even though it took a while to get the app to register all of the chords. This seems to be an issue – and will make Scarborough Fair all that much harder. When Johnny Comes Marching Home – finally! This one took me a little while, but it’s done now. Real fun to play, too. Cowboy Exit Music – first song in the Slides mission, easy as pie.

My bass and guitar are finally up and mounted on the wall again, too – thanks to my dad. The reason why the bass would have come down eventually as it was before, was the fact that my ex somehow used screws that did not fit the dowels, and were therefore not able to expand them as they were supposed to. Yikes. Would have strangled him, had I not noticed the loose screw before anything actually happened. My dad now swears that the bass won’t go anywhere… let’s hope he’s right.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair…?

Well, are you? This song… Rhythm Path Level 5, Mission: Broken Chords… has been quite the hype in the last couple of weeks in the Yousician Facebook group. It seems to be some kind of rite of passage into the “real stuff” – and people celebrate their gold-starring it and are being highly praised when they do. It’s the club of the priviledged for those who have mastered it…

…so imagine how my¬†¬†heart skipped a beat when this song came up next on my list, and how my palms became instantly sweaty. And that’s all without listening to it or looking at it even once – the power of the community and expectations! Ha!

Anyway…¬†well… ouch.

Doesn’t look so hard at¬†first glance… and I silver starred everything on first try. But that’s all I got out of this song, thus far. Damn. That Dm! That change from Dm to F!¬†Impossible. For me, anyway. And then I actually hurt my fingers of my fretting hand from pressing too hard. Damn!

What a bitch! At least for today, there is nothing else I can do about it… and I am not even sure I will ever actually gold star even a single section of it.

Speaking of hurting my fingers:

To the left you can see the results of roughly one month of almost daily practicing.

Cool, huh? They are actual, real-life callouses. Going to have to lay low just a tiny bit now, I don’t want the skin to actually break.
